Art Student Wins MLK Art Contest
Several students entered a recent art competition, but Lamar sophomore Drake Daniel brought home the prize.
Drake has always wanted to be an art student, however, last year his P-Tech schedule just wouldn’t allow room for an art class. He is now taking full advantage of his opportunities in his art class and beyond. Not only does winning the MLK Art Contest provide Daniel with great attention to his art, but he also earned a $1,000 prize.
It was Daniel’s father – an art teacher at Haltom High School who inspired him to join art and to pursue his goals as an artist. “My dad is definitely my biggest inspiration,” he shares.
While Drake clearly has talent, he insists that he wants art to remain a hobby and not so much a career. In his spare time, he currently enjoys working on a special submission for the V.A.S.E. competition. When he’s older, he would like to design cars.
Although he still has two years of high school remaining, college is on his mind. “My entire family attended UTA, so I’m hoping to explore some other options,” Drake says. “For now, I’ll work on scholarships and explore career options.”
