Climate Change Causes Concern

Climate change is a concept that has been debated over decade to decade. Questions continue to circulate of its validity as the problem appears to worsen day by day.

Scientists have gathered much evidence that our climate is getting hotter.

“The planet’s average surface temperature has risen about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit since the late 19th century, a change driven largely by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere.” Environmental Defense Fund writer said.

This change in surface temperature has been caused largely by humans and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are like a blanket,  shielding heat radiation from escaping into space, trapping it on the Earth’s surface, increasing the overall temperature. The gases are emitted into the air when fossil fuels are burned or when exhaust comes out of automobiles.

“There is no question that increased levels of greenhouse gases must cause the Earth to warm in response.” Writer for the NASA environment page said.

We’ve seen the evidence, so why are there people who are doubtful that climate change is a legitimate issue? Many believe that climate change is just a government conspiracy because the evidence seems “unreliable”. However, Professor Mike Rogerson says that the problem with this argument is that many people get their information from the media, not from science. A lot of information can often get twisted in the media.

Another argument people make is that even though scientists claim our climate is getting hotter, it rains a bunch!

“The sun heats the planet. Heat evaporates water. Vapour gathers as clouds. Rain falls from clouds. In short: the hotter, the wetter.” Writer for the University of Hull said.

Scientists, environmentalists, and even celebrities have urgently spoken out about our planet going downhill. Multiple species of animals have been negatively impacted by the increasing temperature of the planet. Animals are being forced to change their behaviors and migration.

“Many birds are nesting, breeding, and migrating earlier as spring arrives sooner than before.” Writer for National Geographic Christine Dell’Amore said.

Animals like starfish and krill are declining due to warmer ocean temperatures, and other species including koalas and polar bears are declining as well. As ice disappears earlier, polar bears have to turn to alternative food sources, which is obviously not the best choice.

Our changing climate can be argued as natural, but there is certainly no question that it has devastated our whole world. Now is the time for us to make an effort to live not just for ourselves, but for our planet which provides for us.
